switch/grass variations (no.4), 2026
Video with sound component when activated
Designed for the yearly outdoor light show hosted by Ontario Place called Lumière: The Art of Light. This year's theme was “Rhythms of Light: Motion, Sound, and Time.” This installation is a continuation of our switch/grass series, where we explore ecological reciprocity. This time around, we have designed an interactive audio component, inspired by the natural rhythms found in plant ecosystems.
To activate this piece, viewers are invited to touch the glowing green cattail. Once touched, the cattail turns orange and sends an electronic signal that triggers a wave of light to sweep across the field. This ripple disperses through the surrounding grass bundles, shifting in brightness and rhythm as it travels outward. These interactions are paired with wind-instrument sounds thus linking light with sound-based motion.
